Voters have spoken, and a new Congress is headed to Washington this January. We welcome the new members of the 120th Congress and look forward to working with them to build a carbon removing future that delivers for their constituents. Carbon removal has never belonged to one party. The federal policies building this industry passed with votes from both sides of the aisle, and we plan to keep it that way as we work to bring carbon removal to gigaton scale. Over the next two years, we have an opportunity in carbon removal to bolster American innovation and boost local economies while keeping our communities at the forefront.
Carbon180’s Road to 2030 campaign gives lawmakers an actionable place to start. Its policy roadmaps chart a path to removing 30 megatons (Mt) of US carbon dioxide per year by 2030. Each roadmap covers a category of solutions, from nature-based approaches to engineered technologies, on land and at sea, and lays out what federal policy needs to do now to reach gigaton scale by midcentury.
When the new Congress is sworn in, our team will brief members and their staff on where federal carbon removal policy stands, the urgency of climate action, and what comes next. Equitable, science-based policy is how we remove legacy emissions from the atmosphere and build a livable climate for current and future generations. We look forward to working with them to make sure carbon removal policy delivers for the climate and for communities where these projects get deployed.
