Last week, the Energy Department issued a request for information (RFI) on new demand-side mechanisms for hubs. DOE’s looking for pitches that work hand-in-hand with existing incentives like 45Q, to help developers raise financing outside of the government’s coffers. Currently, the market for DAC’s been kept afloat by a small pool of voluntary buyers and an even smaller amount of federal purchases through the CDR Purchase Pilot Prize.

While permitting reform has recently (and deservedly) captured the attention of the energy policy community, another avenue for climate action has also been gaining bipartisan traction: leveraging trade policy to spur clean manufacturing across the world. Regardless of the election outcome, enacting a new trade framework that incorporates the cost of climate pollution — also known as a carbon border adjustment mechanism (CBAM) — will be a priority for the 119th Congress and likely find support in the next administration.
